Culturally Relevant Computing

We are developing new technologies and activities that situate computation in a range of different cultural and material contexts. Our aim is to use these unorthodox integrations to both develop new technologies and engage underrepresented audiences in computing and STEM.

We are focused particularly on craft, art, and design. We see longstanding making traditions, like textile and paper crafts, as rich contexts for groundbreaking technological and educational innovation. Our work entails understanding and honoring the often implicit computational practices that exist in these traditions as well as inventing new technologies that integrate current research and traditional practice.
